Finally everything is right with the world because the iPhone now has an SDK, which enables third-parties to develop applications for it. Except Apple prevents any of these third-party applications from using open-source code or being released under an open-source license. As this linux.com article details, the code-signing and NDA compliance Apple requires to run third-party software on the device completely prevents at least GPLv3 licensed code from running on the device, and pretty much kills all other open-sourced licensed software as well. I’m myself am going with the OpenMoko Freerunner instead, I’ve ordered one, and UPS tells me it’ll arrive on Tuesday.

  1. No one would make a computer that doesn’t run open source software, so why would they make a phone that only uses locked software? It doesn’t make sense. I don’t even think it will make more money for them. Apple’s being stupid about this one…=(
