For my latest film project, I’ve been doing a lot of shooting where dialogue is critical. Just using the mic on my camera hasn’t been cutting it, but I couldn’t come up with a better way to record audio. Until I realized I could make a microphone boom and hookup a small digital audio recorder. I made the boom out of some tent poles, and got everything setup, but the digital audio recorder I have access to takes a “Line Input”. I was trying to connect a mic to it, and it was obviously not working. I needed a preamp to convert the mic signal to a line signal.

How does one procure a preamp on a zero-dollar budget? I found my answer in an old Kenwood KA-305 home audio amplifier gathering dust in my basement. The Kenwood has (had) a 1/4in microphone jack plug on the front with a volume knob right next to it. I opened it up just to take a peak, half expecting it to be integrated onto some other large board so it would be unusable. But to my surprise, it was on its own separate board, with a bunch of caps and stuff on it. I liberated the board from the old beast, and looked up the information on the HA1457, the one Transistor/IC looking thing on it. The HA1457 turns out to be a preamplifier! Just what I needed.

After finding a data sheet on the HA1457, I spent an hour tracing wires and figuring out how the thing hooks up. After going back and forth about the pin configurations, I stripped the wires and hooked it up. To my amazement, it works! I quickly mounted it in an old Verbatim floppy box, and procured a 9 volt battery and switch.

Now I have a nice little preamp that’s perfect for field work and runs off a 9 volt battery. I have yet to actually test it with my boom and everything, but once I do I will post an update on how it works.   4. hey, I got arouf that problem of the crapp y camera mic by adding an input jck. I think if I used a boom, I would still need a pre-amp, but, I got a really cheap shotgun mic, made an adapter so it would mount on my camera, and you wouldn’t belive what a $10 ebay mic and some stuff lying around has done to make my stuff unbelivably better. email me at tarnicfilms@gmail.com and I cam send you the story.
