Wired Magazine has an interview with Jonathan Zittrain a “professor of Internet governance and regulation at Oxford University.” He argues that we are going to lose our internet freedom, because malicious software will take over, and force us to use more closed devices that are more tightly controlled by their makers. It’s interesting, because I’ve never really had an encounter with a virus, even on Windows machines. But, just like terrorism isn’t wide spread in the United States, I don’t think destructive viruses that wipe entire hard drives are something that every kid with some 1337 hacker skills is working on. It doesn’t make them any money, so they’d rather hack servers and use them as spam droids. But if we get a virus, that is really good at what it does, and really destructive, then we may see this. It just depends on whether this happens or not.
